Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer’s, affecting about one million people in the United States and an estimated four million worldwide. The prevalence of the disease is expected to increase substantially in the next 20 years. For over half a century, the National Parkinson Foundation (NPF) has focused on meeting the needs in the care and treatment of people with Parkinson’s. Since 1982, NPF has funded more than $164 million in care, research and support services. NPF has a singular focus to improve the quality of care through research, education and outreach. Today, NPF has created a global network including 43 Centers of Excellence at top medical centers, 14 Care Centers at leading hospitals and 39 chapters and 900 support groups serving 100,000 people. NPF believes that the best care is a comprehensive approach that addresses the whole person and the full range of symptoms, while continuously searching for the next insight that will change the course of this devastating disease. Grizzard’s fundraising work with NPF is instrumental in securing the necessary support to make this possible.
Grizzard works with 11 of the NCI-designated cancer centers nationwide as well as other nonprofit cancer centers that are actively engaged in trans-disciplinary research to reduce cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality. The state-of-the-art centers are a major source of discovery on the nature of cancer. Their work involves developing more effective approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and therapy through clinical trials and collaborative research. The centers deliver medical advances to patients and families, educate healthcare professionals and the public, and reach underserved populations. Grizzard’s instrumental fundraising program partnership with the centers helps provide support for their vital programs.
